WRITING FOR DIFFERENT AUDIENCES

 

The first question a writer should ask when starting a piece: "Who is going to read this?" 

Write two separate persuasive pieces on the same exact topic.  Write the first to your best friend (250-300 words), making sure it will be effective with that audience.  Write the second (250-300 words) as if the piece were to be published as a Guest "Op/Ed" in the New York Times. Part of your grade will be your ability to alter your writing, vocabulary and sensitivity to differing audiences while saying basically the same thing.

Your rough draft is due electronically(and hard-copy to edit by a peer) by the beginning of class, Friday, September 4.  We'll edit and submit final versions by the end of class on that day.

On the top of your typed paper, please use the following format:

Weekly Focus #1:  Audience

Title of Your Piece (you can have two different titles if you wish)
