WEEKLY FOCUS #1:

Getting Close to "The Line" Without Going Over

The key to getting what you want is to be forceful without using too much force.

Audience:  Mike McNamara, Principal Jefferson Middle School, readers of the online Jeffersonian

Write a 500-600 word persuasive essay arguing for something to be changed here at Jefferson Middle School.  You may use either a straightforward approach or satire (note:  satire is tough and not for everybody).  Try to be as forceful as possible in your argumentation without going "over the line". 

Specific elements graded in this essay (in addition to "publication readiness" and all that) will be your use of evidence and ability to be strong in your prose without being offensive to your audience.  In other words, write a paper that stands a good chance of actually accomplishing the change you want without getting you "in trouble".

Your rough draft is due electronically(and hard-copy to edit by a peer) by the beginning of class, Thursday, September 3.  We'll edit and submit final versions by the end of class on that day.
